Wind
Small windmills,
or microturbines, have received a lot of publicity recently, largely
because they are a visible and elegant example of renewable energy generation.
However, windmills need a good average windspeed (at least 6m/s) and a clear
'view' of the wind, which means in practice on a tower or pole above any obstructions. The prevailing wind in the UK is from the southwest, so it is particularly important not to have obstructions from that direction. Generally, rural and coastal areas are particulrly suitable for wind generation; anywhere else you will need a careful site survey and monitoring.
Rooftop turbines may look good, but are unlikely to produce any meaningful power
and may cause vibrations in the roof structure.
